POND AERATION

Pond Aeration

Your pond is alive, full of living things. Some you see, your fish, snails, frogs, tadpoles and plants. Some that are invisible like the bacteria that keep the water clean. They all need Oxygen to stay healthy and survive.

Oxygen enters the pond by diffusing into the water from the atmosphere. Submerged aquatic plants also produce oxygen during the day, But this is not enough, especially in the hot summer months when the water is warmer. Decomposing fish waste and algae along with the normal respiration of aquatic life, use up the oxygen faster than it can diffuse back into the water.

Your Pond requires aeration 24 hour a day. The warmer the water is, the less oxygen it can hold and you could loose your fish overnight.

Waterfalls and fountains help supplement an air pump system, but should not be the sole source of aeration. We strongly suggest you use an Air pump and Air Stone  to achieve total pond aeration from the bottom to the top regardless of depth.

Without the use of aeration your pond will become stagnant and smelly not to mention the algae buildup and the stress your fish will go through.

In areas where there are harsh winters, use an aerator in addition to a  Pond De-Icer  that keeps a small area from freezing. This open area allows the naturally occurring gasses to escape and adds oxygen to the water.  Dormant fish still need oxygen under the ice.

So, if your fish are at the surface of the water and look like they are gasping for air, they probably are. Add aeration and keep your pond clean.

Aeration improves water quality

The benefits of aeration are shown and described for each season of the year. As a water treatment barrier, aeration will keep the water fresher with less nutrient recycling from the bottom sediment. Aeration improves water quality

The importance of aeration:

Layers of water form one above another in a stratified nature. This occurs during certain times of the year. Warmer, oxygen-rich water develops near the surface while cooler, nutrient laden and oxygen deficient water forms near the bottom.

It is important to break this cycle of stratification, to make your lake or pond a desirable ecosystem.

Symptoms of Lake Stratification: excessive plant and/or algae, large and/or chronic fish kills, muck accumulation along the bottom and shoreline, foul odors (hydrogen sulfide gas ) bubbling to the surface, cloudy or murky water leading to a loss of water clarity.

A pond aerator provides the perfect solution for improving water quality in Koi ponds, water gardens and lakes. Adds oxygen at the bottom of your lake or pond. Important for algae control.
